Marine Masters Completes Malaysia’s Largest Offshore Decommissioning and Rig-to-Reef Project

Marine Masters has successfully completed the offshore decommissioning of the South Angsi Alpha (SAA) platform, Malaysia’s largest platform removal project to date. The platform’s substructure has now been transformed into an artificial reef, becoming a part of the country’s expanding rig-to-reef marine habitat initiative.

Located 130 km off the coast of Terengganu, the 4,000-metric-ton, four-legged Mobile Offshore Application Barge (MOAB) served as a full production facility for over 15 years. Following the end of production, the structure underwent extensive preparation for safe removal and ecological repurposing in compliance with Malaysian regulatory standards.

Marine Masters executed the complex offshore campaign using innovative techniques, including remote-operated underwater cutting, high-speed PVL hand cutting by divers, and custom-designed lifting systems—allowing the operation to proceed without costly heavy lift vessels. The MOAB jacket was cut at 55 meters below sea level and laid on the seabed to form an artificial reef.

In addition to the jacket reefing, the company removed 13 conductors, retrieved four support legs, and transported the Wellhead Access Platform for safe disposal. The MOAB topside has since been transferred to Labuan Shipyard, and support barges have begun demobilization.

This project marks a milestone in sustainable offshore practices. As the largest decommissioning and reefing initiative in Malaysian waters, it sets a precedent for future offshore retirements by blending industrial removal with ecological rehabilitation. The reef now supports marine biodiversity, enhances fishery sustainability, and offers long-term benefits for local ecosystems and ecotourism.
